The day started on a beautiful note with children coming in from Kibera and Kijiji ready to compete for the price to be won. Three schools were represented during the WASH competition held at Sadili Oval Sports Academy on the 9 th of April. The schools were Ngei primary school, St Catherine, Nazarene and St Stephen. The members of staff from Sadili and the WASH Committee club patrons present introduced themselves led by Kevin Ayuko who also introduced the schools present. Staff from Sadili started by cheering up the children and preparing them for the competitions Lorein Odhiambo teaching them a song on Hand washing and Felix Kipkoech presenting a short poem on the same which they actively engaged in doing the actions and singing along. The children were then given time to prepare their different presentations which the judges were to choose from and the creativity from the children was mind blowing as they had amazing things to showcase. They came up with interesting dramas, poems, so...

WONDER GAMES.

Image
fun ! All activities conducted are coupled with games just so to break the monotony of listening all through, this helps increase the concentration span of the children and also help in better understanding a mastery of lessons learnt. This is actually the most fun moment for all the kids. You can vividly tell this since as soon as a game is introduced, they all jump in ecstasy and sing joyfully. It has been so fascinating playing with the kids, and may sound interesting that I get excited about the games too. Anyway, who would not like to engage in a fun activity? Talking of games does not absolutely mean the very widely known ones like volleyball, hockey or even football. The games played are unique and can be adjusted to suit all, including the physically challenged. And not just that, they are brief and are easily understood by the children. They include the Newcombe game, rally around, beat the bucket, find the goal line, keep the ball, boccia and activity card, to mention just a f...

What happens behind the scenes

Image
Pupils lead in a song that they like. The practice of safe WASH practices is a major skill on the delivery list of services for the court of dreams  program The  skills requires patience, persistent and a listening ear just like that of an innocent child from Kibera slum, however the environment becomes a great hindrance  to make the skills effective for posterity. The life skills sessions which are sports oriented finds Salem (not his real name), a boy who loves sports studying at Undugu Basic Education Unit as an avenue to explore his dramatic behaviors in the field for activity assessments. According to Salem ,who is in phase two as they categories their transition from one phase to the other, Tuesdays are the best day to be in school because of what he called P.E-Physical Exercise days in the school. He is now a regular school attendant and never misses the days when we have sessions at their school. Sometimes Salem may appear absent in class but on our arrival h...

MY EXPERIENCE AS AN INTERN AT SADILI OVAL SPORTS ACADEMY

Image
Lorein Odhiambo taking children through Hand washing. Being in one of the best organizations and having an awesome experience in one’s area of study is usually a dream of every student. To begin with, personally I had always wished that a time would come when I would actually put that which was taught in class into action. I bet the most interesting experience any student would come by is that which is out of class, anyway. Honestly, it was not a walk in the park to join Sadili Oval Sports Academy.   I had to follow the right procedure and also present the relevant documents. It took a lot, but I must admit it was worth it. Actually, I am sure I’m one of the luckiest interns ever, since that very week when I was to begin my attachment, there was an ongoing capacity building training session and I was so privileged to have got a chance to attend it. It was a great time that brought with it several challenges on my side till I felt like I had a lot to learn during my attachment and s...

STRIVING FOR CHANGE IN KIBERA SLUM.

Image
The large Kibera Slum Traversing Kibera slum is always a hustle that only those with the desire, zeal and a big heart to see change happen find motivation in. Baseline studies for year three of the Court of Dreams Project on WASH (Water Sanitation and Hygiene) integrated with Tennis comes in with distinct pathways and navigation to locate the sites. Undugu Basic Education Unit, St.Vincent De Paul and Stara Rescue Center are widely located to the West and far East of the slum all of this schools deal with out of school children who need to be back in the system. The walk through the slum, thin pathways that seem ending into inhabitants household becomes a common phenomenon in getting into the sites on a daily basis. Every walk gives lots of encouragement for the next day’s walk with discoveries of new roots shorter to the site on subsequent walks, with lots of learning from the different challenges faced and different people you get to interact with. Felix Kipkoech taking children thro...

WHAT IT CALLS TO BE AN ACCONTANT

Image
Dorcas taking staff members through a presentation . "For the 3 months I have been in Sadili, the lessons I have learnt, the places I have visited, the people I have interacted with, the exposure I have experienced and the amount of personal confidence I have gained could only be achieved in years if not a decade elsewhere. If you want to equip your child with basic as well as advanced knowledge in WASH among other life skills, Sadili is where your child should be. Having worked with a dedicated team who never wait to be pushed to do what they are supposed to do, who are passionate about the work they do and result oriented, I must say the experience is simply amazing. As far as my role of an accountant is concerned, I have pulled together every bit of my experience to ensure I am able to present records of the donor funds records and that the figures reflect the true measure of our organization’s performance. I look forward to more exposure to our different activities and come...
“ IF YOU ARE NOT COMING WE ARE GOING WERA ” This year we are privileged to work with schools that rehabilitate drop out children and street connected children. Undugu Basic Education unit is one of those interesting schools we are working with. In short description Undugu has both boys and girls who have been drawn from street connected activities and the school endeavors to rehabilitate them by offering basic literacy and numeracy skills as well vocational training to help them with self employment opportunities. Most of the children in this school are in the age of puberty and adolescence. After conducting a session with the children as I was on my way to the office to appreciate the teachers for the time and support and also to notify them that we had finished and now leaving the school, three girls of adolescent age came after me running. Realizing that they wanted to talk to me, I stopped to give them a listening ear and this question immediately followed from one of them, “Teache...

On 13 th October 2017, hundreds of pupils from 9 Primary schools in Kibera and their teachers gathered at Magoso Primary in Kibera for an early celebration of this year’s edition of Global Handwashing Day. This event was made possible through partnership between various organizations and institutions in Nairobi including Sadili Oval Sports Academy, Savo Foundation and the Ministry of Health among others. The Ministry of Health was represented by Public Health Officers from Nairobi’s Kibera and Lang’ata areas. This year’s Global Handwashing Day theme was ‘Our Hands, Our Future’,   reminding us that handwashing protects our own health, but also allows us to build our own futures, as well as those of our communities, and the world. The event commenced with an introduction of this year’s theme and a brief explanation on what it means to everyone- both children and adults. This was followed by a short question and answer session where the pupils were given an opportunity to show how mu...

Internship Success Story 5: Trizah Mboya's Story

Image
We are always proud of interns and volunteers who commit to their work and end up having fulfilling and worthwhile experiences. Meet Trizah Mboya, a 2 nd Year student at South Eastern Kenya University who recently completed her internship at Sadili and is now back to School. A beneficiary of Girl Power Clubs Africa program, Trizah has a lot of positive things to say about her experience. Here is her story: “My name is Trizah Mboya, a former intern at Sadili Oval Sports Academy. I came to know about Sadili through their program Girl Power Clubs Africa back when I was still in class 7 at St. Michael’s Holy Unity Academy. Throughout the program I learnt a lot during the sessions that they had in the school. I have been able to learn a lot more during my internship at Sadili which has also widened my thinking and attitude on lots of things. Throughout my stay in Sadili under the Court of Dreams program, I loved my experience with Mary Rice School- a school for special needs children. Des...
