Sadili Oval: Shaping the lives of children of Kibera through sports and life skills

Image
"Necessity may be the mother of invention, but play is certainly the father", so said Roger von Oech, a contemporary American creativity guru. I couldn't agree more. Research shows that community  sport  programs  provide  children  marginalized  by  poverty, disability, family dissolution, ethno-cultural background and conflict with  training and team experiences to help develop effective social and communication skills, build positive relationships, make friends, and find social support. This is exactly what the Kibera Tennis Court  offers, and it was no different on Saturday, 14th May 2016. The children played all sorts of games including basketball, tennis and hula hoop. They were guided by coaches from Sadili Oval Sports Academy, Trizah Mboya and Asha Adongo accompanied by one of Kenya's best basketball players, Zack Okong'o. Zack Okong'o teaching the children basketball Playing the hula hoop: one of the children in action ...

THE GOOD, THE HOPEFUL AND THE WISH LIST

Image
The Good? 5 players from Sadili qualified to represent East Africa in the Africa Junior Tennis Championships this month! Olivier Kigotho (Kenya), Josephat Garo (Kenya), Chizi Mutsumi (Kenya), Shabani Kabura (Burundi) and Sada Nahimana (Burundi). That puts us in equal footing with the ITF team and ahead of the country teams! We were staidfied that, between studies and tennis, our young players performed very well, and will continue to grow their game. The results of the Kenya National Examinations in both primary in secondary school was fair, and all the students have been absorbed back into our academy school, Malezi or in other good high schools. 78% of those who completed the high school made the pass mark to seek local training and or get into a college (if they are successful in getting a sponsor for the nest level). We have found our first Learning Partner – Legacy Youth Tennis and Education Foundation of Philadelphia, and we have launched an exchange tennis, cultural exchange an...

Malezi School are District Champions

Image
Zack Okong'o received trophy Coach Nico, Captain Zack and teacher Nickson The Lang’ata District has crowned Malezi School as this year’s district champions this weekend at the AMREF training facility and it was memorable. The game was as intense as a world championship-boxing bout with both teams going head to head for the title and the opportunity to represent their district at the County level. Sunshine Academy came out the gates with a full engine of steam, going up quickly 04-00 against the favourites: Malezi High School. But that was brought to a halt, when coach Nick, of the Malezi team, called a time-out and substituted Eddy Amos, a freshman, in the game to facilitate the Box & 1 defense to contain Sunshine’s Churchil Otieno (11).  With the treat contained the Malezi team took back the momentum and erupted taking the lead. Going on a 13-point run the Malezi boys ended the half 24-11, with rejuvenated confidence and focus. The second half, as the fans would confer, was th...

Malezi Basketball Grabs Chance To High School Finals

Image
The stage was set at Sunshine Academy today for the semi-finals of the Lang’ata District. Malezi High, St. Aloysious, Lang’ata High, Olympic and Light Academy were the teams present to fight for their place in the finals. The Malezi Varsity, Langata District favourites, came out the gates with fire in their eyes and clearly something to prove. Eddy Amos (PG/SG), freshman, had his first high school basketball depute today verses the St. Aloysious team; stepping in for Captain Zack Okong’o who had an ankle injury and is out of action for the District Play-offs. With their leader out one knew how Malezi would respond, but respond they did scoring a convincing 94 points against their opponents; ending the game with a 94—04 vicotry over the St. Aloysious. Leading Scorers were: Fred Odhiambo (F)   28-points, 15-rebounds, 2-blocks John Madol (SG/SF)  18-points, 8-rebounds, 9-assissts, 8-steals Lwal Mathiang (SF/F)          16-points, ...
